Oak Creek was for years an outlying rural enclave, but all that changed in 1957 with the construction of an 85 acre manufacturing and technology center called Delco Electronics. Delco became the largest employer in the area. Through the years and a number of corporate changes, the facility was renamed AC Spark Plug, AC Electronics and finally Delphi Electronics and Safety.
This 50 year plus run came to an end during the Great Recession. The site was idle for years before being redeveloped into the Drexel Town Center by Wispark LLC, the real estate development arm of WEC Energy Group. Drexel Town Center is home to city government, the public library and many shopping and dining opportunities.
Today, Oak Creek is one of the fastest growing communities in Wisconsin with the addition of new large employers like Amazon, IKEA and Astronautics Corporation of America.
