The History of the Chocolate Factory Restaurant

We’re continuing our series about local Oak Creek businesses with this installment about the Chocolate Factory.  The Chocolate Factory is a beloved Wisconsin-based restaurant chain known for its nostalgic soda fountain atmosphere, handcrafted sandwiches, and premium ice cream. With locations throughout Wisconsin, including Oak Creek, it has become a cherished part of many communities in southeastern Wisconsin.

Humble Beginnings in Cedarburg

The Chocolate Factory was founded in 1972 by Mike Toffler and Peter Blommer in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Initially conceived as a quaint ice cream parlor and candy store, the original shop was opened on a shoestring budget and is still thriving today. The business was designed on the back of a napkin, and the first menu was hand-printed. By October of that year, the now-famous subs joined ice cream on the menu, marking the beginning of the restaurant’s expansion into savory offerings

Commitment to Quality

From its inception, The Chocolate Factory has emphasized quality and freshness. Sub rolls and croissants are baked in small batches throughout the day to ensure they’re served warm from the oven. Deli meats come from area suppliers who slice them to the restaurant’s specifications, and fresh produce is sourced from local markets. The mayonnaise used on sandwiches is a family recipe, mixed in small quantities to maintain its freshness. Their ice cream, a product of both art and science, is rich and creamy, proudly representing the Dairy State.

Expansion to Elm Grove

In 2011, The Chocolate Factory expanded to Elm Grove, relocating from its downtown Milwaukee location inside The Shops of Grand Avenue. The new Elm Grove restaurant, situated at 13475 Watertown Plank Road, continued the tradition of serving handcrafted subs and premium ice cream, becoming a favorite spot for families and locals alike.

Growth in Waukesha

The Waukesha location, located at 2120 East Moreland Boulevard, is part of the Westbrook Shopping Center. It offers the same menu of fresh-baked subs, salads, and Wisconsin-made ice cream that has made The Chocolate Factory a household name. The Waukesha restaurant continues to uphold the company’s commitment to quality and community engagement.

Oak Creek Opening

In 2016, The Chocolate Factory opened its eighth location in Oak Creek at 7963 South Main Street, becoming the first restaurant to open in the newly developed Drexel Town Square. General Manager Mike Toffler expressed excitement about joining the Oak Creek community and contributing to the vibrant new development. The Oak Creek location continues to serve the brand’s signature subs and ice cream, attracting both new customers and longtime fans.

A Wisconsin Tradition

Today, The Chocolate Factory operates multiple locations across southeastern Wisconsin, including Cedarburg, Elm Grove, Waukesha, Oak Creek, Delafield, Oconomowoc, Pewaukee, and West Bend. Each restaurant maintains the nostalgic charm and commitment to quality that have defined the brand since 1972. Whether you’re in the mood for a handcrafted sub, a fresh salad, or a scoop of rich Wisconsin-made ice cream, The Chocolate Factory offers a welcoming atmosphere and delicious options for all
