The History of IKEA and Its Arrival in Oak Creek, Wisconsin

IKEA’s story begins in the forests of rural Sweden with a determined 17-year-old entrepreneur named Ingvar Kamprad. In 1943, Kamprad founded IKEA as a small mail-order company selling inexpensive household items like wallets, picture frames and pens. The company’s name is an acronym built from his initials (I.K.), the family farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd), and his nearby village (Agunnaryd). From the beginning, Kamprad’s mission was simple but revolutionary: provide well-designed, functional home goods at a price almost anyone could afford.

In the 1950s, IKEA began experimenting with furniture—first as flat, mail-order items, then as complete showrooms. By 1953, the company opened its first furniture showroom in Älmhult, Sweden, allowing customers to experience products in person. Shortly after, IKEA pioneered flat-pack furniture, an innovation born from necessity when an employee removed the legs from a table so it could fit into a car. The idea stuck. Flat-packing reduced shipping costs, lowered prices, and made it possible for IKEA to scale globally.

Through the 1960s and 70s, IKEA expanded across Scandinavia and into central Europe. By the 1980s and 90s, it became a worldwide retail force, growing into one of the most recognizable furniture and home-goods brands. Customers were drawn to its Scandinavian design, maze-like store layout, and an experience that blended shopping with discovery—complete with meatballs.

Despite this rapid global expansion, Wisconsin remained without an IKEA location well into the 21st century. Residents routinely made long drives to Schaumburg, IL or Bolingbrook, IL to buy furniture, kitchens or storage systems. For years, rumors circulated about potential sites in the Milwaukee area, but nothing materialized—until Oak Creek stepped forward.

In 2016, IKEA announced plans to build its first Wisconsin store on a 29-acre parcel at the corner of Drexel Avenue and I-94. The location made perfect sense: easy interstate access, proximity to both Milwaukee and northern Illinois, and a rapidly growing community with a strong retail and commercial track record. Oak Creek had already proven its ability to attract major retailers, but IKEA was in a different league—its arrival signaled that the city had become a true regional destination.

Construction moved quickly. The massive 291,000-square-foot building rose over the freeway, instantly becoming one of Oak Creek’s most recognizable landmarks. The store included the full IKEA experience: 50 inspirational room settings, a restaurant serving Swedish classics, a supervised children’s play area, and a warehouse where customers could pull their own flat-packs. The project represented a significant investment, not only in the building itself but also in surrounding infrastructure, including road improvements to manage expected traffic.

On May 16, 2018, IKEA Oak Creek officially opened its doors. The response was electric. Customers began lining up before dawn, eager to be among the first inside. Parking lots filled, traffic rerouted and Oak Creek suddenly found itself hosting a statewide retail event. Media outlets covered the opening extensively, highlighting the store’s economic impact, job creation, and status as a unique addition to Wisconsin’s shopping landscape.

IKEA’s arrival contributed to Oak Creek’s broader transformation—from a former industrial corridor into a modern mixed-use community. It elevated the city’s profile, drew shoppers from across the Midwest, and reinforced Oak Creek’s position as a premier retail hub. For many Wisconsin residents, the store eliminated the need for long trips to Illinois and provided an accessible gateway to modern Scandinavian design.

Today, IKEA Oak Creek remains one of the city’s largest retail draws. Its presence continues to shape traffic patterns, influence nearby development, and attract complementary retailers. More importantly, it symbolizes how far Oak Creek has come—from farmland and factories to a vibrant, region-leading commercial destination capable of landing one of the world’s most iconic brands.
