Downsizing Easy as 1-2-3

Let’s face it, downsizing isn’t fun.  That’s even more reason to get it done quickly.  Let’s dive right in to making downsizing easy.  Ready. Set. Go!

Ready

Gather paperwork and photos that can be delt with later.  Box them up, ship them out.

Set

Identify what you want to keep.  This can be hard.  Emotions can be attached to stuff.  Some items will seem precious but you can’t use it.  Can you find a new home for it?

Try using different color painter’s tape.  Then all items to be kept will be color coded to their future destinations.

Go

Now it’s time to deal with what’s left.  Consider an estate or garage sale.  Estate sales are executed by professionals.  A real estate agent might be able to help you with a referral.  Otherwise, look online.  Garage sales are the do-it-yourself remedy.

Once the sale is over, there may still be stuff remaining.  Maybe it can be donated.  But even charities can be selective about what they’ll take.  Do some research so you don’t make a trip for nothing.

Now the donations have been made and perhaps there’s still stuff that you can’t even give away.  It’s dumpster time.  This can be the hardest part of all.  There are items that we tote through life, carefully guarding them.  Then we reach a point where we can’t use them and no one wants them.  Hard.

Perhaps the experience will make us more careful consumers in the future.
